Real Wood vs. Composite – Your Local Deck Contractor Presents the Pros and Cons

If you’re planning to build a new deck, or replace your old one, you’re probably wondering what material would best fit your needs. Although there are a large variety of decking materials on the market today, they all divide into two categories: real wood and composite material. As a reputable deck builder, we would like to expose the pros and cons of both, so that you can make a well-informed decision.

Real Wood

  • Ipe is a Brazilian rainforest lumber which is very durable and dense. It comes in a limited range of colors, the most predominant being dark brown. The price is relatively cheap however, you have to take into consideration the fact that it requires pre-drilling;
  • Cedar is a soft wood that is commonly used for handrails. We don’t recommend cedar as a main material for your deck as it gets easily damaged, especially from hail;
  • Tigerwood is an African rainforest lumber that is hard and durable. It has a light color variation, and it comes at the same price as Ipe;
  • Pressure-treated pine is perhaps the most commonly used decking material. Chemicals are injected into the wood fibers to make it resistant to rot and insect infestation. However, this treated pine is not recommended in dry climates as it warps, splits and twists.

Over the last decade, composite decking materials have taken hold on the market. They are used in almost half the decks are built. The main advantages of composite are its durability and longevity. Since it’s made almost 90% from recycled plastics, composite is also an environmentally friendly material. The price for composite decking materials varies depending on the type, strength, color and shape of the boards. However, it’s still cheaper than real wood.
